VEDIC ASTROLOGY
JYOTISH SHASTRA

Vedic astrology or Jyotish shastra in Sanskrit ("Science of celestial bodies" or "Light of knowledge") is an astrological system derived from the Vedas.

It is one of the Vedangas: the six auxiliary arts and sciences of Hinduism, linked to the Vedas. Jyotish is a subtle approach based on the influence of the stars on humankind.

What is the difference between Western astrology and Vedic astrology?

This astrology has similarities to that of the West, but it is based on the Ayanamsha: a correction made each year and linked to the precession of the equinoxes and the annual shift of the Earth's axis, not taken into account by Western astrology, whose study is based on the tropical zodiac, the equinoxes, and the sun in order to measure the signs.

Vedic astrology takes into account the sidereal zodiac, based on the fixed stars of the constellations, and the lunar zodiac. The two zodiacs (tropical and sidereal) are now offset by approximately 24 degrees, and the zodiac signs are consequently shifted.

What are its foundations?

Vedic astrology is based on the following Navagrahas (9 celestial bodies): the Sun (Surya), the Moon (Chandra), Jupiter (Guru), Saturn (Shani), Mercury (Budha), Mars (Mangala), Venus (Shukra) and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu.

In the Vedas, each of these 9 celestial bodies is personified so that we can better understand the character, qualities and energy they carry and their influence on our personality and psychology.

In a natal chart, these Navagrahas reside in one of the 12 houses (bhavas) corresponding to the different domains of life. The Jyotish also takes into account 27 stars or lunar mansions (nakshatras) and the Moon's passages near them, whether in combination (yoga) or not with the position of the Sun.

According to the Vedas, Vedic astrology is a precise science based on physics and mathematics . If we accept the moon's influence on the tides, crops, and animals, we can easily envision a similar influence of the stars on human beings from birth.

The study of an astrological chart is not intended for divination; it involves analyzing and understanding our incarnation through the configuration and influences of the planets and lunar constellations (Nakshatras). We explore the foundations in depth to better understand our functioning, our aptitudes, our innate potential, and our weaknesses.

However, through the analysis of planetary periods (Dashas) and transits (gosharas) we can address future potentials, favorable periods in different areas and better understand our dharma or life path with the perception of our karmic imprints.

Karma (action) is not destiny or predestination. It is a law of cause and effect in which our present state is the result of our past actions. We create our destiny over time; Vedic astrology does not focus on the limitations of past karma but teaches us that we can change our future.

It encourages individual effort and offers support to help overcome difficulties related to unfavorable planetary positions or conjunctions.

My method for creating a natal chart

I approach the natal chart as an evolving interpretation. It's about understanding the deep dynamics at play and their evolution over time, in order to illuminate more accurate and aligned choices.

During the analysis, I primarily study:

  • The main birth card D1 and the maturation card D9 (Navamsha)

  • The true power of the planets (dignities and shadbalas)

  • The ascendant and the Moon, to understand incarnation and emotional experience

  • Activated houses and their aspects

  • The tithi by birth

  • The nakshatras of the ascendant and the Moon

  • The Atmakaraka and its device

  • The evolutionary comparison D1 / D9

  • The current and future dashas and antardashas

This approach makes it possible to link the meaning of the theme to a concrete temporality, without determinism, by emphasizing understanding, discernment and personal development.

SUPPORT / CORRECTIVE MEASURES

  • A healthy lifestyle adapted to different aspects: diet, plants, stones…

  • Mantras

  • Vedic rituals or Yagya ("perfect action") : a fire ceremony dedicated to the planetary deities representing a challenge in our lives. It is also possible to honor a planetary deity representing an advantage in a birth chart in order to strengthen its positive influence. Fire, like Agni, our digestive fire, combined with mantras, has a transformative power, allowing for awareness and thus lifting the veils clouding our discernment.
